KOTA KINABALU: The Yayasan Sabah Group and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to step up collaboration in the fields of research and training on the sustainable management of natural resources.

Director of Yayasan Sabah, Datuk Jamalul Kiram Bin Datuk Mohd Zakaria signed on behalf of the foundation and UMS Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Taufiq Yap Yun Hin for the university.

“It is hoped this agreement paves the way forward for stronger collaboration with UMS on research biodiversity projects at Yayasan Sabah-managed forest concession areas such as Danum Valley, Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon,” said Jamalul.

In his keynote address at the signing ceremony, Jamalul said Yayasan Sabah is committed to ensure the success of research initiatives by providing trained researchers, and infrastructure such as accomodation and laboratory equipment.

Stronger ties with UMS enables the university to maximise its expertise and capacity in carrying out research in the management and exploration of natural resources within the state’s biodiverse flora and fauna.

Meanwhile, Dr Taufiq said UMS fully supported the directive by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Mohd Shafie bin Haji Apdal to ban the export of logs and assured the university will focus on initiatives to develop Sabah’s natural resources and assets.
