Victim Of Gunmen To Install AIS On His Fishing Boats

TAWAU: Owner of the fishing boat which was robbed by a group of armed men in the waters off Tungku, Lahad Datu, is still traumatised by the incident.

Sia Keok Che, 48, from Sungai Besar, Selangor said despite not being at the scene, the incident had left a terrible effect on him as he was now afraid to instruct his men to go for fishing trip after they were beaten up by the robbers using firearms.

“After that incident, 17 of my crew members had to be treated at the Lahad Datu Hospital,” he told reporters here.

All his crew members were still at the Lahad Datu police district headquarters to facilitate investigations.

Sia said he suffered losses of RM80,000 after the robbers torched a light boat, took away boat’s engine, mobile phones and cash belonged to his men.

“We’re also at loss because we couldn’t go to the sea,” he said, adding that he would install the Automatic Identification System (AIS) on all his boats in near future.
