TAWAU: The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Tawau is focusing on disaster preparedness operations for eight villages here which are often hit by flash floods following continuous downpour.
The eight villages are Kampung Batu 2 Tali Air, Jalan Apas; Kampung Wakuba (Apas Parit); Kampung Rawa-Rawa, Batu 4; Kampung Pasir Putih; Kampung Serudung, Batu 22; Jalan Bukit Quin, Batu 15; Kampung Kijang, Merotai and Kampung Iban, Merotai.
Tawau APM officer Captain Hussain Mohd Nor said the current weather conditions were unpredictable and heavy rains and thunderstorms occurred at night.
“We have received orders to be ready at any time in the event of a flood, even all the 22 personnel’s leave has been frozen.
“The APM has provided several rescue logistics including five boats, two four-wheel-drive vehicles, an RQ rescue vehicle, a five-tonne truck and two ambulances,” he said when contacted here today.
Meanwhile, Hussain, who is the secretary of the Tawau District Disaster Management Committee said the they were also ready to provide a temporary evacuation centre for the people affected by the floods.
“Besides, APM is working with the Social Welfare Department to provide food to evacuees at the relief centres,” he said.
In the meantime, he also advised people with information on any kind of disaster such as floods to immediately contact the District Operations Control Centre at 089-749046 within 24 hours, for further action.
