KUCHING: The Sarawak branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) today has given the assurance that there was sufficient supply of chicken in the state for the Aidilfitri and Gawai festivals beginning this weekend.
Its director Datuk Stanley Tan said a visit to three major poultry farms in the state, namely K&L Farming Industries Sdn Bhd, QL Livestock Farming Sdn Bhd and Central Coldstorage Kuching Sdn Bhd, found that the supply of chicken could accommodate demand across the state with an average production of 57,000 chickens per day.
He also said that the price of standard chicken for the period January to May in Sarawak was between RM6.90 and RM8.50 per kilogramme.
“During the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, we found that prices for standard chicken meat was still at the normal level and there was no increase in prices as circulated on social media recently,” he said in a statement here.
Meanwhile, he reminded traders to comply with the Festive Season Price Control Scheme, for the Aidilfitri, Kaamatan and Gawai Festivals, which begins today (May 20) to June 3 for 15 days. During this period it is hoped the price of chicken would be controlled according to the ceiling price gazetted by the ministry.
According to Stanley, warning was also given to all traders across Sarawak not to take the opportunity to raise prices unreasonably and make excessive profits, while consumers were warned not to indulge in panic buying as this would negatively impact prices and supply.
Any complaints regarding unethical traders may be made through the ministry’s hotline at 1-800-886-800 or the KPDNHEP e-complaint portal at http://e-aduan.kpdnhep.gov.my or via Whatsapp at 019-2794317 or by coming in person to the nearest office of the Ministry.
