BONGAWAN: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has challenged former Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan to file a lawsuit if proven that he lied about Pairin chairing a meeting to propose the implementation of the Sabah Resident Pass.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said that he was telling facts based on the minutes of a meeting by the Technical Committee On The Management Of Immigrants In Sabah dated March 14, 2016 at the Chief Minister Department’s Office, Wisma Innoprise.
“What they said was not true. I only quoted the minutes of the meeting which he (Pairin) chaired in 2016, but yesterday he said I was lying.
“The minutes are clear enough; we are not making it up,” he said, adding that social media should not be used as a campaigning platform to spread lies.
Shafie said this during a press conference after he launched TM Net’s Unifi in Bongawan.
The president of Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan), also revealed the names of those present at that meeting, which included former State Secretary Tan Sri Sukarti Wakiman and former Sabah Commissioner of Police, Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun.
He said the Sabah Resident Pass was actually the previous government’s proposal but it has now been named ‘Sabah Temporary Pass (PSS)’ as it is meant to be temporary.
“Hundreds and thousands of illegal immigrants in the state can easily forge the documents (IMM13, Kad Burung-Burung and Sijil Banci) because it is only a piece of paper so if we arrest an illegal immigrant and deport him, he can come back with another fake document.
“This effort was the previous government’s proposal and not all their proposals have been rejected. We will improve on whichever proposal we think is good,” he stated.
During the conference, Shafie also showed the minutes of the meeting to the media to confirm his claim.
“See for yourself who is the chairman. I am not lying and the facts are here,” he said while showing the minutes.
Yesterday, Pairin who was speaking on behalf of Barisan Nasional (BN) at a talk in conjunction with the Kimanis parliamentary by-election, accused Shafie of lying about the meeting having been held.
