KOTA KINABALU: Nearly 8,000 people attended a special parade in conjunction with the official 66th birthday of the Governor of Sabah Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Padang Merdeka here today.
The parade began at 7.30 am with 2,844 participants from 79 contingents comprising the security forces, public and private sectors, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and students.
The Governor then received a salute by the Main Honourary Guard from the 7th Battalion, Royal Malay Regiment led by Colonel Nik Hamdy Ismail which is based in Kabota Camp, Tawau.
The national anthem ‘Negara Ku’ and ‘Sabah Tanah Airku’ were played followed by a 17-cannon salute.
Juhar then inspected the contingents accompanied by Major General Datuk Mohamad Khir Abdullah from the Lok Kawi Camp.
Juhar’s wife, Toh Puan Norlidah RM Jasni, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Dr Jaujan Sambakong and Datuk Christina Liew as well as state and federal ministers also attended.
Following the parade, presentation of awards would take place at Istana Negeri at 10 am while a banquet would be held at Banquet Hall, Sabah State Assembly tonight.
The official birthday celebration this year also featured a number of other events including a tea party for children with special needs and orphans on Oct 10 at the Nexus Spa & Resort Karambunai.
In addition, an exclusive exhibition entitled ‘Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama’ would be launched on Oct 15 at the Sabah Museum Complex while the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Charity Golf tournament was scheduled on Oct 26.
