SMS Labuan Tightens Controls On Lab Safety After Mercury Spill

LABUAN – Sekolah Menengah Sains Labuan (SMS Labuan) has tightened controls on laboratory safety in the wake of the incident where a thermometer broke and spilled mercury.

Three students were exposed to the dangerous chemical in the Thursday incident but doctors had given them a clean bill of health.

Its principal Mahamad Shukri Said, in a statement to Bernama Friday, said outdated and old equipment would also be reassessed for replacement especially those involving hazardous chemical substance.

He added that all students and staff involved in laboratory work had also been told to strictly adhere to all standard operating procedures.
