KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Susan Sheward MBE, chairlady of Orangutan Appeal UK, has handed over a cheque for RM10,000 to the Sabah Wildlife Department to be paid as a reward for the successful arrest and prosecution of the culprits of the horrific attack on a bull Bornean elephant.
At an event to celebrate Sheward’s receipt of the Datukship award from Sabah, she has handed over the cheque to Dr Sen Nathan, representing the Sabah Wildlife Department.
This follows the tragic news of the recent horrific killing of a bull Pygmy Elephant in Sungai Udin, Tawau, and the subsequent arrest of those accused of this crime.
The RM 10,000 reward that Orangutan Appeal UK has given is upon the successful conviction of the suspected elephant poachers.
The poor elephant in this case was found with more than 70 gunshot wounds.
This follows Sheward’s commitment on the 2nd of October to match the reward that had already been placed by the Sabah Wildlife Department.
Orangutan Appeal UK is a UK registered charity founded by Sheward MBE in 2000.
Dedicated to the rehabilitation and preservation of the endangered orangutan, the Appeal works closely with Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and has invested over £2 million in projects in Sabah including the construction of essential facilities at Sepilok, funding seven members of local staff at the Centre and running a post release monitoring project.
The charity also operates an adoption scheme to sponsor an orphaned baby orangutan through their rehabilitation at Sepilok.
