SESB Pulls The Plug On Power Thieves

KOTA KINABALU: Energy officials raided ten companies which have been stealing electricity or tampering with meters, causing losses amounting to nearly RM1 million.

The raids were conducted in the state capital and Keningau from Aug 4 to 6 by Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) together with the state Energy Commission.

“From these raids, we found that some of the companies comprising one providing hotel and spa services, a property management company, workshops, wood processing factory and car wash had been stealing or tampering with their electric meters, ” said SESB acting managing director Datuk Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid.

Total losses amounted to RM846,589.67, he added.

He said these companies were suspected to have been involved in power thefts for between eight months and about four years, adding some were repeat offenders.

Abdul Nasser said the property management company in the city was suspected to have stolen the most, accounting for a loss of RM504,710.77.

He said SESB was in the midst of bringing them to court.
