KUCHING: A total of 117 events mainly for domestic and eco-tourism have been listed under Sarawak’s Calendar of Tourism Events 2021, said state Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew.
He said they include the Miri Food and Exhibition Carnival in January, Pesta Dabai Song and Chap Goh Mei Parade Bau (February), Grand Opening of Borneo Cultures Museum and Kabong International Kite Festival (March), Pesta Kaul Mukah and Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari (April), Selangau Rafting Safari and Gawai Carnival Peringkat Bahagian Betong (May).
“Among the other events are the Irau Aco Lun Bawang and Rainforest World Music Festival (June), Borneo Cultural Festival and Serian Rafting Challenge Festival (July), Sarawak Spartan Race and Pesta Pakan (August), Sibu International Base Jump and 16th Bintulu International Kite Festival (September).
“(There will also be) Sarawak Regatta and Pesta Benak Sri Aman (October), Pesta Telaga Air and Pesta Nanas dan Buah-Buahan Sarikei (November), Pesta Tanah Lumpur Berbuak and Regatta Kalaka (December),” he told reporters after chairing the Sarawak Tourism Coordination Committee (STCC) meeting here today.
According to him, the focus next year is on community-based or domestic tourism events because the state’s tourism industry had been badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ting said international tourist arrivals were expected to remain low in the first half of next year, prompting the ministry to turn to promoting events for domestic tourism.
He said the events lined up for next year were more than the 105 listed for this year.
Meanwhile, on the Sia Sitok Sarawak Campaign launched last August by the Sarawak Tourism Board (STB) to promote domestic tourism, he said it had been quite successful, generating about RM900,000 from the sale of 634 tour packages involving 3,677 pax.
He said his ministry also planned to promote more beautiful waterfalls in the state as eco-tourism products for next year.
