Sarawak Have Its Own Regional Tourism Satellite Account

KUCHING: Sarawak is the pioneer state in Malaysia to have its own regional Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), a popular and internationally recognized method for measuring tourism contribution to the economy.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, with this TSA, Sarawak state government and tourism industry players are definitely equipped with credible data to develop new effective strategies and policies to bring in vast economic benefits.

“Sarawak will continue to work with the Department of Statistics Malaysia to ensure regular update on our TSA.

“In addition, in line with Sarawak’s economic development strategy to build a digital Sarawak, my ministry is upgrading and providing various tourism statistic information in digital format in order to facilitate fast, accurate and up to date data for the state’s tourism industry,” he said while delivering his speech at the launching ceremony of Sarawak Tourism Satellite Account here, today.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Sebastian Ting and Chief Statistician Department of statistic Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin.

Meanwhile Dr.Mohd Uzir said, based on the statistic in 2018, Sarawak tourism industry contributed a total of RM122 bilion from RM1.177 trilion of Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product.

“With Sarawak’s population of just two million, it’s a good thing compared to the other states.

“Before this (2017), Sarawak was ranked number four. Most states are now moving forwards to improving their economic performance,” he said.
