SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) has been asked to restructure its settlement plan at Batu Sapi here, especially water villages to prevent the recurrence of fires.
“I have asked MPS to restructure the village settlement plan by creating a distance of 15 feet (4.57 metres) between houses.
“Most homes affected by the fire in Batu Sapi were built too close to each other,” said Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, Arifin Asgali when met by reporters after presenting the Nur Jauhar Foundation contributions presented by the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Sabah, Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Kampung Bonggaya Baru here today.
Arifin, who is also Sekong assemblyman said the fire that razed the village in Kampung Bonggaya Baru on Nov 20 involved 72 houses that were too closely built within an area of 0.81 hectares (two acres)F was p.m. a
He was upset by the number of homes affected by the fire in a very small area when Kampung Bonggaya Baru was gazetted in May as covering 8.9 hectares (22 acres).
He also said the state government had submitted an application to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to build a fire and rescue station in Batu Sapi.
“The application has been approved. We are just waiting for the station to be completed,” he added.
