Sabah Athletes Who Do Well Can Compete At Higher Level

KENINGAU:Sabah athletes selected to represent the state at the 2020 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) next year should strive to do well and push them to compete at a higher level.

Sabah Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe said the achievement of athlete Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian should be exemplified in his dedication in the sport that took him to compete at the Asian level.

“This national athlete is a Keningau native of Kampung Pasir Putih and just returned from the SEA Games, New Clark City Philippines,” he said when addressing the closing ceremony of the 9th Sabah Sports (SAGA) here tonight.

Phoong said the achievements at the Asian level needed to be realised in an effort to elevate Sabah to become a ‘sports powerhouse’ in the country.

He was also proud of athlete Hizillawaty Jamain from Keningau who bettered Salesnella Gabi’s previous 800 metres record of two mins 27.31 seconds in 2013 to two mins 24.48 seconds.

Farell Glen Felix from Tawau also broke the old record in the men’s high jump from 1.98 metres to 2.05 meters.

“The new records are testimony that Sabah has the potential to do well at the 2020 Malaysia Games (SUKMA),” he said.
