TAWAU: International tourist arrivals are expected to increase with the introduction of direct flights from Brunei this year.
Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Christina Liew said the flights by Royal Brunei Airlines to Tawau are welcomed as they will boost the tourism sector as well as the state economy.
She said the flights are expected to begin between October and November this year.
“This (the direct flight) is very good, and if I visit our border with Indonesia, I hope they (Indonesians) will also provide a direct flight to Tawau,” she told reporters here Monday.
According to Christina, Tawau is an alternative gateway for foreign tourists to the east coast of Sabah.
Among the tourist destinations in Tawau are the Balung River Eco Resort, the Imbak Canyon Conservation Area, the Maliau Basin, and Bukit Gemok.
