KOTA KINABALU: The State Fisheries Department has issued a warning on a red tide phenomenon after detecting the algal bloom in Kota Kinabalu waters.
Its district enforcement officer Roslee Osman said, the red tide has reached a dangerous level though it would not be harmful to consumers after ingesting fish.
However, the phenomenon can be detrimental for fishes kept in cages as their gills could be clogged, causing them to eventually die.
“It is advisable to move your fishes from cages to ponds or tanks,” he said, referring to those involved in fish cage activities.
“The sea water must also be filtered before putting it into the fish pond or tank,” he added.
