RANAU: A 53-year-old man, said to be the town’s vagabond, was killed after his head was crushed by a passing vehicle shortly after midnight on Wednesday.

Jupiri Kuding from Kampung Suminimpod was believed to have been sleeping by the roadside as he was drunk, and could have been hit by a vehicle, whose driver was probably not aware of hitting anyone.

“The driver who hit this victim may not have realised that he was lying there as there are no streetlights and road was dark,” said Deputy Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee, the district police chief.

He said passers-by had noticed the bloodied body by the roadside at about 12.50am and decided to check on him, adding that the police were called when they realised he was badly injured.

DSP Farhan said Jupiri was found with severe head injuries and was believed to have died on the spot.

Jupiri was identified as the man who used to loiter around Ranau town.

DSP Farhan urged the driver who had hit the man as well as witnesses to the incident to come forward and assist in the investigation.

The case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act.
