KOTA MARUDU – Several stretches of road between Tandek and Pitas here are under water cutting off traffic to the north eastern part of the state following heavy rains since 10.00pm Tuesday.

It is still raining in most areas in the district and the levels of the two major rivers that passes through the area – Sungai Kebatasan and Sungai Bengkoka have passed the danger level, and still rising.

In a statement Wednesday mid-morning, Mulliadi said the water level at various points were from 0.1 meter – 0.5 meters.

He said even four-wheel drive vehicles and trucks have been warned not to pass through as the currents were very fast closer to the rivers.

“The Civil Defence (APM) officials have moved out to the affected villages and are telling people in the affected areas to be ready to move out at a moment’s notice,” Mulliadi said.

The water level at Sungai Kebatasan has passed the danger mark of 6 metres while at Sungai Bengkoka the water level is at 4 m danger level mark.

“We received calls about the floods early this morning (Wednesday) and we were informed that some 140 people have moved on their own to SK. Rukum, Pitas as their houses are flooded,” said a spokesman at the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operations room in Kota Kinabalu.

The spokesman said personnel from various agencies were on the ground monitoring the situation and making assessments as to went to begin evacuation.

Several BorneoToday readers sent Whatsapp messages and photos to tell and show about the deteriorating situation.

However, if the situation prolongs, motorists can take the longer route to Pitas via Telupid, driving through Sapi, Nangoh, Paitan and Kanibongan before reaching the northern district.

A BorneoToday reader from Paitan said they too had been experiencing overnight rain but the trunk road was still passable.
