Pandikar Should Be Above Politics; Understand Feelings Of Borneo Folk

Shafie Apdal being greeted by supporters when he arrived at Kampung Kauran, Keningau recently (November 17, 2017) for a gathering with the people in the interior districts.

COMMENT: The president of Parti Warisan Sabah, Mohd Shafie bin Hj Apdal had never mentioned Pandikar Amin Hj Mulia in his speech in front of more than 10,000 supporters on Sunday, 19th November, 2017 at Kampung Kauraan in Keningau on the occasion of the Party’s ‘Ramah Mesra Bersama Masyarakat Keningau’ where the president said that those who thought Sabah and Sarawak were having equal status with the states like Perlis in Semenanjung Malaysia “were stupid”.

2. Hence, why would Pandikar “terasa” or felt that he was indeed stupid unless it was true that in other words, he did not actually understand the factual matrix of the history leading to the formation of Malaysia where among others it was the late Tunku Abdul Rahman who signed on behalf of the Federation of Malaya, the late Lee Kuan Yew for Singapore, the late Abang Hj Openg for Sarawak and the late Donald Stephens for North Borneo (Sabah) as evidence that at the formation of Malaysia, the status of Sabah, the then North Borneo and Sarawak was on equal footing with the Federation of Malaya and not with the respective states in the Federation of Malaya.

3. In fact owing to the incessant and ceaseless effort of our very own political activists, I truly believe that most Sabahans now realize that the Federal government has breached several terms of the Malaysia Agreement. That was why the MA63 forum organized by Pandikar at Kian Kok Hall recently was very poorly attended. Hence, it is fair to say that it actually reflected on the fact that nobody seemed interested to listen to his version of the MA63.

4. What Sabahans are demanding right now is for the Federal government to implement the provisions in the MA63 that touch on the rights of Sabahans guaranteed upon the formation of Malaysia. For example, the right to be given back to Sabah, the sum equivalent to 40% of the net revenue collected from Sabah. This is in fact, a constitutional obligation on the part of the Federal government.

5. In fact as the Speaker of the Malaysia Parliament, Pandikar should be above politics and if he cares so much about Sabah, which I believe he is, he should have therefore, allowed motions to debate the MA63 in Parliament, instead of challenging for an open debate with the president of Parti Warisan.

6. Being a Sabahan and a Speaker for that matter, Pandikar was in fact a pride to all Sabahans, and I think he knows about it. It is therefore his duty not to act against his conscience but to understand the real feeling and hope of Sabahans and Sarawakians in making the Malaysia story a success in so far as Sabahans and Sarawakians are concerned.

7. We are in fact very thankful to God the Almighty that a person in the name of Mohd Shafie Hj. Apdal has chosen to leave voluntarily the comfort and luxury of being a government Minister together with the perks that follow, to lead a then impossible mission, a difficult struggle through Parti Warisan to win back the rights of Sabahans from the Federal government which were guaranteed under the MA63.

More than 4,000 people from UMNO, PBS and STAR applied to join Parti Warisan in Keningau.

8. Sabahans, especially in the interior of Sabah, are beginning to understand and appreciate Mohd Shafie’s sacrifice to forego the comfort and the luxury of his office and that is why Sabahans are now more inclined to listen and support him, especially the KDM communities, as evidenced from the overwhelming attendance in Keningau recently.

9. On several occasions, in his meetings with the Christian leaders of the KDM communities in Sabah, he has made it known that his stand on the issue of using the word “Allah” was very consistent in that he has supported the use of the word “Allah” in Malaysia by the Christian communities in Malaysia which the Federal government eventually allowed to be used in Sabah and Sarawak only.

10. Mohd Shafie has stressed that he has never wavered in his stand on that particular issue. It is not because he wishes to entice them to join Warisan by promising to look after the interest of the Christians communities in Sabah but to protect them as Sabahans in accordance with the Federal Constitution. It is because he believes that there is no compulsion in Islam and that non-Muslims are free to practice their own religion or beliefs. That is one of the tenets of Islam which ensures the general rights of non-Muslim in Islam.
