KOTA KINABALU – Both the Chief Minister as well as the Prime Minister congratulated the police for thwarting a kidnap attempt off Semporna Thursday night, and in the process knocking off three Filipino gunmen.

Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman said the incident showed that security forces was now more prepared to engage criminals at sea and would do everything they can in battling against future abductors coming into Sabah waters

“I would like to congratulate the security forces who courageously carried out their important duties and we must continue to work together to ensure kidnappings will not happen again in Sabah,” he said when met at an event Friday.

In PETALING JAYA, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak praised the quick action of General Operations Force’s Tiger Platoon against the gunmen they encountered at sea near Semporna.

“Credit should be given to the security forces for their quick action, as it is not easy to patrol such vast territorial waters,” said Najib in a blog post on Friday.

“Malaysian security forces will work together with the Philippine authorities to identify the kidnapped individuals and take action against the kidnappers,” he said.

A shootout ensued when the platoon manning an unmarked boat were approached by the gunmen on Thursday night.

Three gunmen were shot dead, two gunmen were captured alive, while two others managed to escaped during the skirmish, taking along a kidnap victim.

One kidnapped skipper was rescued.

One lance corporal was shot in the foot in the shootout and is being treated at Hospital Semporna.
