KUNAK: A mother and son cheated death as they escaped from their blazing home in Kampung Zainal Gunung, Jalan Jaya Baru near here this afternoon.
Nordiana Sabir, 37, said she realised her rented home had caught fire after the wood from the roof fell to the floor while she was performing the Asar prayers in her room.
“As soon as I realised (about the fire) I looked for my 17-year-old son who was eating in the kitchen and told him to run out of the house.
“I was able to find some important documents and ran out as well,” she said when met at the scene today, where three houses, including the one Nordiana lives in with her husband and two children, were destroyed in the fire.
Kunak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) chief Madzlan Sarman said the department received a distress call at 3.33 pm.
“Eleven personnel led by Senior Fire Superintendent II Rasuah Kaluang rushed to the scene with a fire engine, an EMRS unit, and a utility vehicle,” he said.
According to Madzlan, they had difficulty controlling the fire due to the low water pressure from the fire hydrant.
He said the fire was doused by 4.20 pm and the operation ended at 5.40 pm.
