COMMENT: I am puzzled by the rash response given by the Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister, Tan Sri Dr James Masing towards a suggestion that Sabah and Sarawak be considered as one region in the Federation of Malaysia.
As a prominent leader and seasoned politician, he should have made an effort to seek verification on the matter and not simply jump the gun.
When Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie bin Apdal proposed of one region, he was referring to East Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak as two separate entities but as one East Malaysia.
Why was Masing so quick to think the worst when Sabah is just as earnest and sincere in wanting to see the Malaysian Agreement of 1963 finally fulfilled?”
He should have taken the initiative to get a clarification instead of being impulsive and allowing emotions to get the better of him.”
Sabah and Sarawak can work together to make what is promised under MA63 happen according to the aspirations of Sabahans and Sarawakians.
Masing himself in June last year said his Parti Rakyat Sarawak considered forming a Borneo Bloc to boost East Malaysia’s position as co-administrators in the Federation of Malaysia.
Likewise, since its formation in October 2016, Parti Warisan Sabah has always spoken of starting one such bloc to lend a bigger voice in the struggle to reclaim what is promised to Sabah and Sarawak in MA63.
So let us work together as one bloc instead of reacting hastily because it will not be constructive to our efforts in restoring our rights that are stipulated in MA63.”
There is so much we can gain by working together as a team rather than separately. Sabahans and Sarawakians have so much in common and so much to gain when we sit down together.
