KOTA KINABALU – The Chinese Consul General in Sabah Chen Peijie has heaped praise on Sabah for its “culturally-exciting-and-harmonious” celebration of the lunar New Year.

“The spring festival atmosphere is even stronger in Sabah as compared to my home town in the big city of China,” said Chen who hails from Beijing.

She said she was especially impressed that Chinese New Year celebration in Sabah is also being celebrated by various races and ethnic groups, besides the Chinese community.

She told the reporters this during the walk about in Lido Square organised by its management company Cara Kaya Sdn Bhd, to extend warm Chinese New Year greetings to the public and the traders there.

Also in attendance were chairman of Cara Kaya Sdn Bhd, Datuk Seri Panglima T.C Goh and Lee Seng Wah, chairman of the Lido Hawkers Association (Perlido).

She was responding to a question on her observation and sentiment toward the atmosphere of the Chinese New Year celebrations in Sabah, as compared to China.

Chen also disclosed that although this was her first visit to Lido Square since her posting to Sabah more than two years ago, some of her colleagues were nonetheless among the regular shoppers there.

She also commended Goh and his company for providing a well-organised place for the hawkers to make a decent living.

Besides this, on behalf of the Chinese government, she also wished the people of Sabah a Happy and Prosperous lunar New Year.
