LABUAN – Labuan police marine foiled an attempt to smuggle various type of contraband cigarettes and alcoholic drinks worth of RM59, 598.00 and seized a wooden speed boat with high-powered engine worth of RM65, 000 on Friday.
The marine police was patrolling Pulau Burung waters when they spotted the suspicious-looking boat speeding from Kinabenua river at about 12.15am, Bernama reported Saturday.
“The boat quickly sped off towards Rancha-Rancha waters when seeing our men approaching them,” Labuan police chief Supt. Adzhar Othman told reporters here Saturday.
The total seizure including the boat and engine is RM124, 598.00.
He said the skipper with his crew jumped into the sea and managed to escape.
Upon inspection the boats were found to be laden with 12 boxes of Absolute Kretek Mild cigarettes, 46 cartoons of Carlsberg, two cartoons of Tiger Beer, eight boxes of Mainof Vodka and other booze believed to be smuggled from the duty-free island.
The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1) (e) of the Customs Act 1967.
Meanwhile, the police also resolved the truck battery theft with the arrest of a 33-year-old man on Feb 8 at about 3.30pm at Kg Durian Tunjong.
The suspect with previous criminal records and drug offences is being remanded to be charge in court next week.
Adzhar also said the police also resolved a gang robbery took place at a hotel in downtown on Feb 7 at about 6am.
He said the woman, 22, was approached by two unidentified man who assaulted her and robbed her gold ring and cash of RM600.
“One of the suspects also a recidivist was arrested the same day at about 8.30pm at Kg Gerik with the public cooperation, while his accomplice is still at large,” he said.
