Labuan Marine Cops Nab 5 Viet Fishermen; Seize RM462K Catch, Trawler

LABUAN: The Marine police Labuan arrested five Vietnamese and seized their fishing trawler worth of RM350, 000 on Saturday (Aug10) for illegal fishing near Beting Jahat waters off Labuan.

Sabah Marine Police (Region 4) chief commander, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said the Vietnamese vessel was intercepted during ‘Op Gelora’ around 11 am, while they were fishing about, 15 nautical miles off Tanjung Kubong north Labuan waters.

“We seized the wooden-fibre glass vessel with a cloned registration number of a local fishing boat from Kudat, Sabah, and all the crews with their skipper are taken to the Labuan marine jetty for further investigations,” he said today.

Those detained were the 37-year-old skipper, Mai Van Qui, and his four skippers, Mai Van Nguyen, 41, Ho Chi Linh, 27, Danh Thien, 30 and Dhong Van Dep, 35-year-old.

The agency also seized the fishing gears including diesel-powered engine worth of 80, 000, Thuraya satellite telephone (RM1,500), sea cucumber iron fork (RM15, 000), fishing net (RM3, 000) four units of different brands GPS (RM12, 000) and RM1, 000 worth of fish tank.

The case was being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
