LABUAN – Favorite teams dominated the 16th Labuan 10s Rugby Carnival 2016 with a handsome victory against opponents Sunday.

OSCA Warriors from Sabah won the men’s cup category edging the Labuan’s emerging team VRC Flash with 10-0 to bring home the Member of Parliament’s Cup and cash.

Last years’ winner Labuan Marlin was in the third place after defeating SDRU Sibu RC, 10-0.

VRC Storm another home ground team won the men’s bowl category, edging Sipitang Hunters also with 10-0.

The two-day event was held from Saturday at the Labuan Square.

Another favorite, Brunei Bastidos won the veteran cup category of the Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia’s Cup against KS DBKL of 17-7.

The DBKL team had to be contented with second placing in the veteran's category.

SOWRC Angels from Sabah won the Puan Sri Datin Seri Utama Diana Diego’s Cup after edging UITM Simba RC with 5-0.

Melaka Juniors won the School Cup category of the Labuan Umno Youth’s Cup with a 10-0 score against Sabah College.

Labuan Rugby Association secretary Ahmad Effendy Abd Razak said the increased number of teams featuring foreign players from Fiji and New Zealand showed the tournament has gained tremendous supports.

He also said that the event was also aimed at exposing the popularity of rugby among government officials and to the people of Labuan in general.

“We are drawing up promotion strategies and carry out aggressive campaign to lure more international players into our tournament next year.

“With our consistent efforts and continuous support from the government especially the Ministry of Federal Territories, we will see this Labuan 10’s Rugby Tournament will be similar to that of international sanctioned events of Singapore 7s and Hongkong 7s,” said its rugby carnival director Rashid Adli

He said the tournament would not have been successful without the sponsorships.
