LABUAN – Top local and foreign rugby teams will again be participating in the Labuan 10’s Rugby Carnival 2016 next month.

The event from Oct 22-23 will see participation from Bastidos and Flying Kukris RFC from Brunei, Blackhawk Otai, TUDM Blackhawk, Front Rows and KS DBKL (Kuala Lumpur), NS Wanderers (Negeri Sembilan), teams from Sabah and Sarawak among others.

Tournament director Abdul Rashid Adlie said the 16th edition of the carnival which features the Member of Parliament Cup and Youth Chief Cup will see participation by 50 teams.

“We are glad the tournament received overwhelming response with increased participation and it surpassed our target. The carnival will be divided into four categories – Clubs Open, Ladies Open, Veteran Open and School Open,” he said.

He said the Labuan Rugby Association (LRA), being the carnival organiser with its main sponsor Singapore-based company Core-IRM UMC International, would continue to play its role of developing the sport of rugby as a major sports event in the duty-free-island and mark it as Malaysia’s annual tourism sports event.

Meanwhile, former Sabah women’s rugby player, Puan Sri Diana Deigo has been appointed as the patron of Labuan Women’s Rugby Association with immediate effect.

The appointment by Labuan Rugby Association (LRA) marks a major milestone for the association as the patron’s role is to define the ethos and the possible appointment of the new line up and to take it to greater heights.

“It is an honour to be entrusted and appointed as the patron of the association. It is my expectation to further develop the sport with the cooperation of all parties,” she said Saturday.
