Kapit Road Badly Damaged In Landslide After Heavy Rain

KAPIT: A road connecting the interior town to Mujong here was hit by landslide today after incessant rains last night.

Kapit Fire and Rescue Department chief Erwandy Tugor said the landslide, which occurred at KM1 Jalan Melekun-Mujong, was noticed by residents at about 6 am who then alerted the authorities.

“The incident was due to the continuous rain last night. No casualties were reported. There will be a traffic diversion to connect the Mujong area with Kapit town,” he said when contacted here today.

Kapit district police chief DSP Freddy Stainlaus Bian, when contacted, said the affected residents can use the river route to go to Kapit if they have urgent matters to attend to.

“However, the public is urged to stay at home following the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Kapit Division to curb the spread of COVID-19,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kapit district Civil Defence Force reported that six houses in Kampung Baru, Kampung Muhibbah and Simpang SK Nanga Yong were flooded between 0.09 and 0.6 metre.

Civil defence officer Johny Jamit said the flood monitoring system at the Kapit City Station showed that the river water had reached the warning level of 14.72 metres.

He said there was no evacuation yet.
