TAMPARULI: The haze over Kota Kinabalu and the surrounding areas is believed to be due to open burning carried out by the locals here over the past week.

Visibility was low along the Kota Kinabalu-Tamparuli road due to smoke, as viewed from Bukit Ruhuiang, the district’s highest hill.

However, visibility for motorists along the route was about 10 kilometres and the air quality is still at moderate level.

The hot weather also contributed to the haze as regards open burning activities.

Meanwhile, Bernama noted that members of the public, despite the haze had not shied away from recreational activities such as football, trekking and jogging.

As of this afternoon, the air quality of five areas in Sabah, namely Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu, Kimanis, Keningau and Federal Territory of Labuan is within the moderate range.

The Air Pollution Index (API)  reading for Sandakan is 55, Kimanis (56), Keningau (58), Kota Kinabalu (60) and Labuan, 69.
