“This is an act of treason and those who commit treason must be punished,” said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.
He said additional provisions would be made to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) soon to include punishment for those who produce fake identity cards.
In the same breath Hamzah warned that foreigners found holding fake identity cards would also be punished under this law, pointing out that two offences would be included in the First Schedule of the Act.
“The Act does not have to be amended for this purpose. The Home Minister has the power to make additions to the schedule and I intend to do this as soon as possible,” he was quoted as saying by the Star after making an official visit to the National Registration Department headquarters in Putrajaya.
The report said that authorities had carried out 37 operations between January and July 17 this year.
Thirty-five foreigners were nabbed for possessing fake identity cards.
