KOTA KINABALU: A Form Five student was heading home on his motorcycle when he ran smack into an oncoming four-wheel-drive vehicle.
He was rushed to hospital but died while undergoing emergency treatment about an hour later.
The mishap took place at about 8.35pm yesterday along Jalan Utara Baru near the Taman King Fook junction in Tawau.
Tawau police chief ACP Peter Umbuas said preliminary investigation revealed that Muhammad Nazrul Hisyam Firman, 17, was riding from the direction of Taman Ria to his house in Tanjong Batu at the time.
He said the 4WD, driven by a man aged in his 30s, and coming from Mile 1, was attempting to make a turn into Taman King Fook when it collided with the oncoming motorcycle.
“The victim hit the front portion of the vehicle before falling to the road while his motorcycle was dragged about three meters from the scene,” he said in a statement today.
Umbuas said the 4WD driver who was unhurt was detained to facilitate investigations for reckless driving under the Road Transport Act.
