Foreign Ministry Slams Padua; Gutter Politics Wisma Putra Tells Warisan

STATEMENT: Anifah Aman, minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, is aware of the provocative statement Loretto Padua Jr. the Secretary General of Parti Warisan Sabah issued, pursuant to the response made by Hishammuddin Hussein’s answer to the question asked by Shafie Apdal, the Member of Parliament of Semporna in Parliament on 27 July 2017.

In his statement, Loretto Padua Jr accused the Government of Malaysia of not wanting to conclusively resolve the claim made by the Philippines on Sabah. This accusation is baseless, provocative and misleading and is to be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

The Foreign Ministry has repeated the Government’s position that the Philippine claim is without basis. Sabah has been recognised by the United Nations and the international community as part of Malaysia since its formation on 16 September 1963. As such, Malaysia does not recognise and will not entertain any claims by any party on Sabah.

As an MP of some years, Shafie Apdal is well acquainted with the Malaysian Government’s position. By the same token he is also well aware that this matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and not the Minister of Defence and his party’s subsequence response is mostly an attempt to show confusion and mislead the people.

This is disappointing since a matter of this importance and sensitivity must not be the subject of gutter politics.
