The first Sandakan Food Festival officially started on August 26, 2017, with fun fringe events such as the Amazing Sandakan Food Race pitting 14 teams against each other in crazy food challenges that reminded one of some of the popular local food products.
Another humorous event was the ‘Bao’ eating competition with a beautiful harbour view backdrop, drawing 10 contestants trying to out-eat each other.
In her support of the festival, Linda Tsen, Member of Parliament for Batu Sapi, highlighted that eating is a very Malaysian tradition and food brings people together like a family at the dining table.
She reminded everyone to come and support the festival and especially to preserve our food traditions that make Sandakan a special town.
Anton Ngui from the Sandakan Tourism Association, the organisers of the festival, is once again calling for home bakers and professional pastry chefs to innovate and try their skills at creating the next UFO (or cow dung) tart, the unique pastry that was created in Sandakan decades ago.
Exciting prizes will be on offer to those who win the hearts and mouths of the judging panel.
The Great Sandakan Baker Competition (2nd September) will be one of the highlights at the Sandakan Food Festival village which opens on the 30th August for 4 nights, 5 – 10pm.
Musa Aman, the Chief Minister will be attending the festival on Friday, while Masidi Manjun, the Tourism Minister will drop by on Sept 2.
