LABUAN: Five men believed to be involved in an illegal car racing activity were detained by the Department of Investigation and Traffic Enforcement (JSPT) Labuan over the last 48 hours starting on Tuesday.
The arrests were made following a recorded video that went viral in the various social media platforms since Tuesday night, minutes after the illegal race which ended early Tuesday.
The illegal racing allegedly took place at Jalan Patau-Patau Pulau Enoe.
The suspects aged between 21 and 28 years old with two of them not having a driving license, were apprehended after being questioned at the police station.
Labuan police chief Supt. Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the vehicles believed to have been modified as sports cars are still being detained for further investigations.
“Our traffic enforcement team led by Inspector Kalista Demson managed to detect all the suspects through the cars registration number and summoned them to the police stations,” he said Wednesday.
All of them are being investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving recklessly and dangerously and the vehicles detained under Section 64 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
If convicted, they can be jailed for up to five years and fined not less than RM5,000 and not more than RM15,000, adding that the Probationary Driving License (P) of those drivers could also be revoked if found guilty.
