TAWAU – The Fire and Rescue Department here managed to save RM10 million worth of property from fire between January and Thursday, through speedy response to 324 emergency calls.
“It is the result of our speedy response and also cooperation from members of the public who called us promptly about the fires,” said its chief, Ismaidi Ismail at a Firefighter Cadet 2016 Programme for Tawau Zone, Thursday.
He said estimated property losses due to fire in the same period amounted to RM4 million.
Only four crank calls were received by the department in Tawau zone, which encompasses the districts of Tawau, Kunak, Semporna and Lahad Datu, throughout the period, he said.
Meanwhile, he said 551 fire operations were recorded in the same period, involving various categories such as structures (30), weeds (113), and vehicles (11).
He said 199 rescue operations were recorded in the same period, involving road accidents (61), beehives (32), snakes and iguanas (65) and other operations (41).
On the cadet programme today, he said it was to acknowledge participants who successfully underwent various fire and rescue exercises according to standard operating procedure, with an aim to produce human capital that are knowledgeable in the aspect.
“Overall, 76 percent of the cadets underwent the tests, which is a good start for the zone,” he said.
Ninety-three cadets from six schools in the district – SMK Tawau, SMK Kuhara, SMK Jambatan Putih, SMK Balung and SMK Jalan Apas were awarded their ‘rank’ during the ceremony.
