Family Of Fourteen Left Homeless After Batu Manikar Blaze

At the height of the blaze at Kampung Batu Manikar in Labuan Wednesday morning. Some 14 people were left homeless.

LABUAN: A family of 14, including three children, was left homeless with only the clothes on their backs, after their semi-concrete double-storey house and possessions were completely destroyed in a fire at Kampung Batu Manikar Wednesday morning.

Firefighters battled the blaze at Simpang 29, Batu Manikar for more than an hour, with several tow vehicles pulled away in the nick of time by neighbours.

An elderly woman, with two children and her daughter in-law, escaped unhurt in the 10am fire.

A spokesman for the Labuan Rescue Department said its operations room received a distress call at about 10.22am and firefighters arrived at the scene 15 minutes later.

When the crew arrived, the house was already engulfed in fire and they took about one hour to control the flames.

Investigations to identify the cause of the fire is ongoing and the amount of losses is yet to be ascertained.

Village head Ismail Samad disclosed that the family members are now staying at their relative houses in the village.

He made a cash donation to the victims to help lessen their financial burden.
