KOTA KINABALU – The MCA Luyang Assemblyman’s office successfully conducted a new voter registration exercise with the help of Election Commission (SPR) officers.

Luyang Assemblyman, Hiew King Cheu advised those who have not registered as voters (yet) to exercise their constitutional rights and should do so immediately.

“They can go to Kota Kinabalu City Hall, district council offices, the post office or go to the SPR offices which are available in certain districts. For those who wish to register should bring along the MyCard,” he said Saturday.

There were many people who came to register as new voters at the kiosk Saturday, while others came to have their voting constituencies changed due to change of residencies.

Hiew said for those who have moved from one place to another should change the address on their MyKad first before applying to vote in the constituency of residence, eg. from Sandakan to Kota Kinabalu.

Many people who moved to the state capital from Sandakan or elsewhere, and even from Semananjong, do not vote due to the time, traveling and financial constraints.

“Therefore, if they wish to vote in Sabah, or at a new constituency in Kota Kinabalu, they should change their address to the current locality and then apply for transfer so that they can constinue to vote locally,” added Hiew..

Hiew also disclosed that he was informed that the SPR has also arranged registration mobile counters (for new voters) on weekends at the shopping malls to help those who wish to sign up.
