KOTA KINABALU – MCA Luyang assemblyman Hiew King Cheu has slammed SAPP deputy president Melanie Chia for making a fuss over movement of voters from Kepayan constituency to Luyang through the new redelineation exercise proposed by the Election Commission (EC).

Hiew in a statement Thursday said that Chia should not be complaining about that, but instead, should be working hard on the ground for the people in the constituency.

He also pointed out that the relocation of 3,641 voters from Kepayan into Luyang was merely an exercise to balance the number of voters in these two constituencies.

“The people will judge by the performance and contribution of the person or the party. It is no point to get worried while sitting and shaking legs,” said Hiew.

Recently Chia had expressed her worries over the additional 3,641 voters moved to the Luyang state constituency from the Kepayan constituency under the new redelineation exercise by EC.

She said the move was unfair as it reduced the Chinese voters from Kepayan in order for BN to secure a win in GE14.

Hiew however explained that the Kepayan and Luyang constituencies were closely connected together and by relocating the 3,641 voters from the Kepayan into Luyang was merely an exercise to balance the number of voters in these two constituencies.

“The previous total number of voters in Kepayan was 27,414 and Luyang was 20,351. Now the EC has moved 3,641 from Kepayan to Luyang which gives the two constituencies a balanced number of voters in both constituencies, and that is 23,773 for Kepayan and 23,992 for Luyang,” said Hiew.

He said that MCA was working hard and doing its best to serve the people.

“We have an obligation to not only serve the Chinese community, but we make sure all people benefit. The Sabah MCA deputy chairman Francis Goh Wah San is continuously doing his very best to serve the people, not only in Kapayan but the whole of Kota Kinabalu area.

“His hard working spirit is a good example for all of us. When compared to the people who only appear during the election time, will the public give them their votes?” questioned Hiew.
