PENAMPANG: The good work of several enforcement agencies over the last week has not escaped the attention of lawmaker Darell Leiking despite him being on a working trip to Australia.

Some 40 undocumented foreigners were nabbed at Kobusak while 3,570 cartons of ‘duty unpaid’ cigarettes along with a vehicle was seized and two men detained for alleged smuggling activities.

Darell’s Political Secretary, Pritchard Gumbaris, when contacted said the Minister of International Trade and Industry was thankful for the seizures and arrests, and praised the dedication of the enforcement agencies in an attempt to clean up the district from illegal activities.

“Immigration department officers conducted a surprise inspection on a squatter house at Nagasiba, Kobusak. A total of 40 undocumented alien have been detained in the early morning raid.

“The Penampang Parliamentary Office has been working with the land owner for the past few months, hence the operation was made possible and is a success.

“Later that same day, a joint operation led by officials from the Customs Department and assisted by Penampang District Council, MPKK and Parliamentary Office was conducted on a sundry shop at Kg Guunsing after receiving tip.

“We were told foreigners were still operating at the outlet from a rear entrance.

“Customs managed to confiscate 3,570 cartons boxes of ‘unpaid duty’ cigarettes, a hilux which is believed to have been used to transport the contraband and detained two foreigners to assist in their investigation.

“The two operations showed that we are serious in combating undocumented aliens and illegal businesses in Penampang,” added Pritchard.

The smuggling case will be investigated under the Customs Act 1967 Section 135(1)(e) (Amended 1980) and those found guilty can be sentenced to a fine of up 20 times of the value of the duties or three years jail or both under Section 135 (1)(i) of the same act.

“We also would like to thank the community for becoming the eyes and ears for the government and there will be more continued surprise operation to be conducted in Penampang District until Penampang free from aliens, illegal cigarette and illegal lottery,” added Pritchard.
