IT WAS fun time for five-year-old Jackrison James recently at the Promenade Hotel Kota Kinabalu. Not only did he have a belated birthday party, it was an early Christmas celebration too.

Promenade, collaborating with the Children Wish Society (CWS) of Malaysia granted a final wish for James, diagnosed with a relapsed left eye retinoblastoma.

Diagnosed in July last year, Jackrison completed chemo treatment last December 15, with the left eye enucleation being done in early October the same year. But the relapse was diagnosed almost a year later.

Enucleation is the removal of the eye that leaves the eye muscles and remaining orbital contents intact. This type of ocular surgery is indicated for a number of ocular tumors, in eyes that have suffered severe trauma, and in eyes that are otherwise blind and painful.

Currently he is undergoing 3-times weekly chemo with a once-weekly intrathecal chemo.

The surprise but belated birthday party for Jackrison themed Bob The Builder (based on his favourite cartoon); he was then surprised by a motorised car brought in from Kuala Lumpur by the CWS team.

CWS vice president, Teoh Teik Hoong said, “we are all glad to be able to see Jackrison all excited with the new toy car.

“We are sure he will be the racing king in his village after this. It’s truly a blessed early Christmas for him and his family.”

Accompanying Jackrison was his mum.

Also attending were volunteers from Persatuan Kababayan Sabah Kota Kinabalu and staff from Hospital Likas.
