KOTA KINABALU – The Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) have engaged Hokkien song crooner extraordinaire, Catherine Yu from Selangor, to perform at this year’s Chinese New Year Carnival.
Catherine who hails from Sungai Besar, Sabak Bernam, Selangor is of Chinese-Indian parentage. She became a household name for the Hokkien songs enthusiasts worldwide when she won the championship title for the World Hokkien Songs competition that was held in Fuzhou, China in 2009.
The very talented singer started her singing career at the tender age of six and became a professional singer when she was only 13. She had performed in overseas in countries like Indonesia, Brunei, Xiamen, Taiwan and Singapore.
Announcing this, FCAS president, Datuk T.C Goh noted that Catherine will be performing as guest artist at the opening night of the carnival, on January 23.
He also reiterated his call urging the people, especially those who live in Kota Kinabalu City and its vicinity, to come out in full force to partake in the four-day carnival which will be held at the Padang Merdeka here, from 23 – 26 January.
He further noted that besides the change of its venue from Gaya Street to the Padang Merdeka, this year’s carnival will also feature more varieties of programs to keep the people entertained.
They included cultural performances by students from the various local schools, lion and dragon dance performances, song and dance and talent competitions, Cheongsam pageant contest, exhibition of traditional Chinese New Year delicatessen. B
Besides this, the carnival goers will also get the opportunity to purchase a wide range of Chinese New Year goodies at the Chinese New Year Night Market catered by the organizer.
