SEMPORNA – Six Chinese tourists were lucky to escape with minor injuries when the boat they were travelling in after a trip to Mabul Island, crashed into the jetty at Kampung Sum Sum Jetty here Saturday night.

A male tourist suffered a minor injury to his mouth while his female companion suffered injuries to her brow. Both were given outpatient treatment at the district hospital here following the Saturday 7pm incident.

The others were not injured but shaken by the accident.

Semporna police chief Supt Peter Umbuas said they believed that the boatman had lost control of his boat in the darkness and knocked into the jetty.

He said police have detained the 41-year-old local boatman for questioning over the incident where the six tourists were returning from Mabul island to the mainland Semporna.

“So far, we believe that the boatman had not committed any offence under our laws as far the accident is concern,’’ he said.

However, Supt Peter said that they were checking if he had the relevant permits to ferry tourists and such action would come under the purview of Tourism Malaysia.
