KOTA KINABALU: More women candidates could be fielded by the Sabah Barisan Nasional in the 14th general election (GE14) and they have submitted a list of 20 ‘old and new faces’ as possible candidates for GE14.
Armani Mahiruddin, the Sabah Wanita BN chief told reporters at an Aidilfitri ‘open house’ at her residence here, that all the 20 had the potential to be fielded.
She added that Sabah Wanita Umno and BN were ready to face GE14, as “we also always go down to the ground from time to time to meet the people.
“Apart from that, the JR Plus approach also gives us added value in our efforts to be close to the people.”
The JR Plus or “Jalinan Rakyat Plus”, which was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in April, functions as a platform with the Umno and BN election machineries in facing GE14.
Asked whether she would be a candidate in GE14, Armani said she left the matter to Chief Minister Musa Aman to decide.
At GE13 BN fielded seven women candidates one more than the six in 2008. Six of them emerged victorious – among them federal lawmakers Rosnah Shirlin (Papar), Linda Tsen (Batu Sapi) and Mary Yap (Tawau) and at state level, Jainab Ahmad Ayid (Karambunai), Hamisa Samat (Tanjung Batu), and Anita Baranting (Tandek).
At a recent Wanita Umno function, Musa had hinted that its leaders were capable of making an impact on the people when delivering government policies due to their presence and persistence at the grassroots level.
