SANDAKAN: Sabah MCA treasurer Datuk Chin Kim Hiung is in support of Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin’s call to the federal government to allow Sabah manage Labuan if it is unable to return the territory to a fully duty-free zone.
Chin believes Sabahan political leaders can improve the social and economic well-being of the people and Labuan by making the island a truly tax free haven again.
Chin who is also the party’s Libaran division chairman said when contacted on Monday to comment on Bung Moktar’s statement.
Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Bung Moktar when debating the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in Dewan Rakyat on Oct 4, urged the federal government to allow Sabah to develop Labuan if it does not have any plan to implement for the island.
Bung Moktar who is also Deputy Chief Minister I claimed presently the only duty-free item in Labuan seemed to be chocolates while prices of other items are similar to the mainland.
“The Federal Territories Ministry should visit Labuan and perform studies to return duty-free policies back to the territory which would benefit residents,” the Lamag assemblyman added.
