LABUAN: Labuan rugby fans home ground celebrated after their team beat favourite Sabah 17-10 to win the women’s under-20 (U20) of the National Rugby 7s Championship (National Sevens 2019) for the first time at the Ipoh Padang, Perak today.
For the Labuan ruggers’ supporters the result was ‘exciting’, as it was a nail-biting finish, and the luck was on Labuan U20 women rugby squad to emerge champion in the prestigious national rugby tournament.
The squad was down 0-10 in the first half but bounced back with fighting spirit in the second half, scoring three tries in the last four minutes of the game.
That was through injured forward Nuramira Nassan who came off the bench to show the squad’s real sting, scoring first try before Nurul Izza Khalisah Abu Samah scored another try to tie the score of 10-10 with less than two minutes of play.
Nurul Izzah became the ‘hero of the final game’ when she crossed the line a second time at full time to clinch victory for Labuan and finished the game with 17-10 against Sabah.
Labuan squad was shone on the first day, winning all its group stage beating arch-enemy Sarawak 17-10, 27-0 against host team of Perak, and 17-0 versus Terengganu.
The squad also beat Johore in the semi-final winning handsomely 22-10.
Labuan’s Jannie Peter was the best player of the game.
Labuan men’s U20 took third place beating Johore 26-7 in the semi-final.
Labuan Rugby Association president Abdul Rashid Adlie said it was the chief coach and team spirit that made the victory was possible.
“Effective coaching runs deeper to our ruggers…coach who focus on positive, personal relationships with their athletes had ensured our success in this game,” he said.
Labuan Rugby Association secretary Ahmad Effendy Abdul Razak said the game was a good exposure to the Labuan ruggers to excel more in the future tournaments.
