JAKARTA: At least 26 passengers were killed after the express bus they were travelling in plunged into a ravine and landed in a river in South Sumatra, Indonesia, on Monday night.
Quoting South Sumatra District Police Public Relations Head, Supardi, the local media reported that the bus with 50 passengers on board departed from Bengkulu at 11 pm local time and was heading to Palembang when the mishap occurred at Km9 Desa Plang Kenidai Kelurahan Plang Kenidai Kecamatan Dempo Tengah, Kota Pagaralam, just before midnight.
“The express bus skidded and plunged into a 150-metre ravine before landing in the Lematang river,” he was quoted as saying.
At press time, the death toll stood at 26, with the rest suffering serious injuries.
The authorities are still in the midst of evacuating the trapped victims and sending them to Basemah Pagar Alam Hospital.
So far, there was no report of foreigners involved.
