KOTA KINABALU – In a day full of surprises and upsets, 14-year old Putatan student Farith came from behind to upstage his more illustrious and experienced opponents in the first-ever organised Penampang beatbox battle held recently at the Tamu Ground in Donggongon.

Farith despite his youth and lack of battle experience proved his true mettle and confidence to display brilliant patterns of every trick in the beatbox dictionary; Lipsroll, fastbeat, inward bass, musicality, technicality, snare etc, to outshine 15 other participants.

“He was never intimidated even for a moment during the hard-fought finale against another fellow student the very experienced Kaeril,” said Peter Dicky Lee, Managing Director of Borneo Events Production, which staged the show.

Dicky added: ”I’m very happy and surprised at the very high standard shown by all the contestants. Some of them are first-timers but they are already showing their potentials as the future beatbox stars of Sabah in the likes of Nobita, Yusra, Mizie, Ricoz and Anry.”

The veteran organizer cum singer also expressed gratefulness to Penampang MP, Darell Leiking as well as Kenny Chua who gave strong support to this youth-oriented program

Coming in at 2nd place was 16-year old Kaeril – a 4 year veteran in the beatbox scene having participated in 5 outings so far.

He seemed to have won initially during the intense battle with Farith for the title but lost out during the crucial 30 seconds final battle.

In 3rd place was Afiq. Popular with the audience for his matinee idol looks, Afiq confidence level was amazing, dancing, teasing and trying to ‘psycho’ his opponent at every chance. Afiq could go far in the beatbox industry.

Another Putatan student, 15-year old, Jeff Law standing at a towering 185cm and whose matured looks really belie his age, took 4th placing, with Eyon in 5th.

The next destinations for the beatbox battle series are Tambunan, Labuan as well as the eastern towns of Tawau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu before the Grand-Finale expected to be held early next year at the Imago Shopping Mall.
