TAWAU: A Technical MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) will be built in Ranau and is expected to be completed in another two years, said Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) director-general Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad
He said the construction of the MRSM through the strategic partnership of MARA and Petronas provided the opportunity for access to quality education to Sabah-born students.
“The site for the new MRSM has been identified and is waiting for its execution,” he told reporters after launching the MRSM Tun Mustapha Excellence Awards Ceremony, here Saturday.
According to Ibrahim, the construction of the MRSM was fully funded by Petronas while MARA provided the teaching expertise in the field of management.
Meanwhile, he said, the Semporna MRSM built in Kampung Tagasan would begin operations early next year.
The Semporna MRSM that would accommodate up to 200 students was an Ulul Albab MRSM which would focuse on Islamic religious studies apart from other subjects.
To date, he said, there were three MRSMs operating in Sabah, namely, in Tawau, Sandakan and Kinarut.
Ibrahim in his speech said Mara had not reduced the number of students sponsored to study abroad.
“However, we do not anymore give out sponsorships to students who studied abroad on the expense of their family and later on applied for our sponsorship. This is because priority is given to MRSM students who are already in our system,” he added.
According to Ibrahim, each year MRSM produces 7,000 students with 80 per cent of the total as top achievers.
