SANDAKAN: The 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) is a sincere effort by the government to lighten the burden of the people and is not a bribe as alleged by the opposition.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the government could afford to give BR1M as it had the financial capability to help people who need assistance.

“The opposition said there is no need to give BR1M, that it is bribery. Ask whether it is bribery if the government gives BR1M to help the needy ease their burden,” he said at a BR1M presentation ceremony here Monday.

The event involved 2,580 recipients of whom 2,460 were in the state constituency of Sungai Sibuga and the remaining 120 from Gum-Gum state constituency.

Musa who is also Sungai Sibuga assemblyman said as an elected representative, he was happy with the federal government’s commitment to distribute BR1M to the people in the areas.

He said giving BR1M was in line with Barisan Nasional’s struggle for the wellbeing of the people.
