PENAMPANG – Two requiem masses for the late Brother Ben Snoeren mhm who died in Holland on Feb 13, will be offered by the Kota Kinabalu Roman Catholic archdiocese.
The archdiocese in a statement said that the funeral service of Brother Ben is scheduled on Saturday Feb 18 in Missiehuis Vrijland at Oosterbeek Holland at 10 am.
As such, on the same day, a mass will be celebrated at 10am at St Pius X Church, Bundu Tuhan, where the late Bro Ben gave the best (and most) part of his life helping the people, in particular orphaned children (at the Don Bosco Home) there.
A second requiem mass has also been planned for Monday at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kota Kinabalu, to start at 9 am.
Bro Ben had served with love and dedication in the archdiocese, mostly in Bundu Tuhan, for almost 60 years, before his superiors urged him to return home to retire.
He went back to the Netherlands in poor health in 2014, and took up residence in the Vrijland Mission House in Oosterbeek until his death.
Sabah’s last Mill Hill missionary died at 87.
He was born in Tilburg, Holland, on 9 October 1929. Martien (Martin) Snoeren joined the Mill Hill Missionaries in 1951. He took the name Benedict or Ben when he made his commitment as a lay brother in 1952 and his final commitment in 1954.
He was recognised for his selfless service to the church and the people of Bundu Tuhan when on 28 Apr 1994 he was knighted by the Dutch Government and bestowed the “Ridder in de Orde Van Oranje Nassau” on the occasion of the birthday of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
