Updated: Early Morning Fire Razes 45 Homes In Kg Bakau Squatter Colony

KOTA KINABALU: Some 45 houses in a squatter colony at Kampung Bakau Likas near here, were destroyed in a morning fire Tuesday.

City police in a statement Tuesday afternoon clarified the fire was at Kg Bakau, and not at Kg Muhibbah as earlier stated.

Police said 286 people were left homeless, of which 224 were adults, 53 children and five infants.

Eight adults and four children were classified as non citizens.

The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department in a statement said three fire trucks with 44 firefighters including 13 auxiliary personnel from the Lintas Fire and Rescue Station were dispatched to the area following a distress call at 8am.

“The team arrived at the scene at 8.10am and managed to control the blaze by 8.51am and prevent it from spreading to 30 other houses,” it said.

The department said the cause and estimated losses were being investigated, while no casualties had been reported.

A 68-year old unemployed man who suffered minor burns on his hands and legs was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Hundreds were left homeless by the blaze. The victims are being put up temporarily at the Likas Multipurpose Hall.
